Reflecting back on National Allotments Week in mid-August, we take a look at how these shared community spaces and urban sanctuaries are key for fighting food waste and reducing food miles, promoting positive environmental practices, supporting wildlife, as well as bolstering general health and wellbeing.

On the 17th of August, we co-hosted our Breathe in Brighton Anti-Idling Campaign launch event with Brighton Peace and Environment Centre. The event aimed to attract a range of local people eager to learn about how they can tackle local air pollution through daily actions, and work collaboratively to seek viable solutions to combat engine idling.

Beach goers in Worthing were evacuated last Sunday after a number of people reported having sore eyes whilst enjoying the morning on the beach. The cause of the incident is still unknown. However, authorities are suggesting it may be from vessels on the channel carrying a gas or cargo tanks.

A new recommendation from Natural England has resulted in a halt in planning permissions in the Solent area including Fareham, Gosport, Havant, East Hampshire and Portsmouth. The advice from Natural England has stated that all new-build houses need to be nitrate-neutral after the ongoing problem of high levels of nitrogen in the catchment from housing and agriculture.

This year, Breathe in Brighton are focusing on the impacts of engine idling.
