So following on from our previous snowman blog,  we wondered how many snowmen it would take to make a significant difference to the peak flow during snow melt. Well a starting point is to calculate how many snowmen are actually possible.

Argyll’s team of consultants has recently pondered the effect of the recent weather on local flood risk. While we enjoyed a few days of snow before the ensuing travel disruption became monotonous, we pondered what would become of all this snow once the weather warmed. Large areas of Sussex and the UK remain snow covered while many of the urban areas are no longer fairy tale postcards.

A few weeks ago I went to see a film/documentary called Chasing Ice. It is a documentary following the mission of James Balog, who founded the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS), from the idea itself to its implementation and the results. The EIS installed cameras across the Northern Hemisphere in 2007 (mostly Greenland, Iceland and Alaska), which were set up to take photos at regular time intervals.

For many employees and employers, the classic 9-5:30 working week has been all that they have known, this is especially true if you are PAYE. Coming from a freelance background where I have worked anything from 1 to 7 days per week, the 9-5:30 model has taken me a little while to get used to. So much so that when I became a PAYE employee, I came to an agreement that I would work a maximum of 30 hours a week split over 5 days.

As HR Director of Argyll Environmental I decided that all the staff needed a ‘toughening up’ day. The consultancy team I thought spent far too much time sitting behind desks, goggle eyed at the computer.

But what to do? We had all been on Landmark Day last year and had greatly enjoyed ourselves – but this had to be far less enjoyable. I wanted a challenge that would have the team quaking in their boots.
